Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruit (currants/raisins)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Powdered sugar for glazing

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar; sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in melted butter, eggs, orange zest, flour, spices, and salt until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (1-2 hours).
  5. Gently fold in dried fruit. Divide dough into 12 pieces and shape into balls.
  6. Arrange on a lined baking sheet; cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes while preheating oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before glazing with powdered sugar.
